I ordered this book for my son when it was first published and he devoured it in a few days. He can't wait for the next one in the series. Michel Guyon spins a fanciful tale of a young boy whisked away on an adventure he never asked for -- unlike many iterations of the "normal kid pulled into a fantastic world" trope, Archibald isn't unhappy and abused, nor is he stuck living with evil relatives. He's actually a lot like most kids, although his highly advanced intellect causes him to be a bit of a loner because he doesn't always relate to his classmates. It's a refreshing spin on an old idea.Guyon also takes the road less traveled by giving Archibald's sister Hailee a role to play. While Archibald navigates the world of Lemurea, where a group of witches fight a centuries-old battle against the monsters who threaten their land, Hailee travels London trying to figure out what happened to him. She becomes a fully fleshed-out character in her own right, distinct from Archibald and going through her own character arc in her adventure. The illustrations are the icing on this cake. Guyon even incorporates them into the layout, having the text wrap around them in a way that helps heighten the mood evoked by his words. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to the hardcover, which is a beautiful presentation of this fantastic tale. Buy an extra one as a gift for a special someone!

Beyond the fantastic beasts populating the book, beyond thebreathtaking adventure full of surprising twists, there is a basichuman dimension to this story that I find deeply inspiring. By chaptertwo, once the premise established, right after Archibald's big plungeinto the unknown, you enter a world of frightening contrast, withthose amazing young girls armed with the most magical weapons and thehighest ideals, trying to live a seemingly normal life despite theextreme dangers surrounding them.Thee "daughters of nightfall", as they were called following theirordeal, have their own funny language, funky hats, glowing stones, complex alphabet, they mix science with herbology, they use lanternsmade out of fireflies, they are completely disconnected fromArchibald's reality, and yet you feel so close to them. As you learnmore about them, you develop a deep connection with their amazingsurvival story, based on events that unfortunately took place...In the end, the real magic in Archibald Finch resides in the author'sability to keep the characters' lives and emotions on a human scale,in the midst of flying Marodors (the intriguing monsters roaming theunderworld) and exploding golems (the young witches' weapon ofchoice).Entertaining, fun, and compelling.

I It starts like a pretty classic children’s book, with a boy losing his Grandma, exploring her huge manor, and trying to bypass the scary butler standing between him and his Christmas present, or what he thinks to be his Christmas present... That first chapter is already really fun. But what comes next is just so different that what I’m used to in this kind of book. There are too many magical things in the story to list them all, but the dog pillow was definitely my favorite. I want one just like that! The human portion of those really intriguing monsters, the marodors, was I think the scariest part of the book, but looking back, the real scary thing is that all this is loosely based on actual events, something that really happened. It makes for a very interesting book for sure.

What a fun and fantastic read! I read it myself and am now reading it to my 8 year old boy who loves fantastical magic and mystery. With literary winks and nods to historical facts it kept me intrigued as the non heroic hero of the story fumbles through the dark new world he finds himself in. I love that Archibald has to be guided and protected by the wiser and braver characters- the girls/witches.I was also very invested in Archibald’s sister, who is the only witness to Archibald’s vanishing. In the past, like any other proper big sister, Hailey was mostly engrossed in her cell phone and avoiding her younger brother. Now haunted by his disappearance, she is embarking on her own adventure, as she tries to find him while outrunning the darkness that has now been awakened in our world.I personally can’t wait for the next book, and when I’m done reading this to my son, I believe he will feel the same!

What an amazing story! Technically, it’s actually two stories and you navigate in between from one chapter to the next. It’s pretty smart. One takes place in London, often in mysterious and spooky places that offer the most magical backdrop for this adventure, like that old manor Archibald’s parents inherit, or the antique shops his sister explores while searching for him. It’s 2018 London but it feels like it could be 1818 or earlier. That’s pretty smart too because it makes it easy to move back and forth and dive into the other story, the other world, the one that is officially magical, with its fantastic beasts, its witches and its unfinished battle from the Middle Ages. Combine the two worlds and the whole thing reads like a puzzle that you put together little by little. It’s captivating.
