I purchased a used copy of the Reader's Digest hardbound version of the Song of Hiawatha and other poems. This version contains beautiful illustrations, his long poems and many shorter ones. I'm very pleased with the condition of the book, they said "Like New" and it is.
The condition note said†library discard with usual markings. Hard cover worn on edges.†It started falling apart, dropping chunks of pages, as soon as I opened it. Any page I turn falls out. Was supposed to be a gift for my grandson but will unfortunately just wind up in the garbage.
the poem itself is beautiful, which is why i wanted to buy the book. this may sound corny, but my wife likes me to read to her as she falls asleep, and a frequent choice are longer poems such as this or Evangeline. My 5 star review is not for the poem itself, which is wonderful, but for this book. It is quite wonderfully formatted and out of a zillion or so Hiawatha books out the, this is by far the nicest i have seen and the price is quite reasonable as well
Though this is written in poem format, it is indeed a story. It is a beautiful story that reveals the glory of pre-European involvement in the Americas, specifically the north mid-west. Like many Americans, I had heard the name Hiawatha, and Minnehaha but to understand who they were and why they are important you should read this book.This book takes us through a some what shallow version of the spiritual side of the native tribes of the North American Continent. But for an outsider like me, it was rich indeed! I learned 100 time more than I knew about native culture after reading this book. I recommend it for any American who wants to understand the natives better.
The book is a great size and the font is easy to read and flows well throughout the page. Remington's illustrations add detail and interest for the visual person. After all these years, I still can't figure out if the poetry is any good, but I love the story and have a son now so I will pass it along to you.
Everyone has watershed moments from their childhoods and Longfellow's poem, Song of Hiawatha is one of mine. In my grade school (a country church school back in the early 1950s) we had this fantastic collection of poetry and short works that were published together as a single volume; as part of our reading work, would take turns standing in front of the class reading out loud from this book. A shortened version of The Song of Hiawatha was one of the selections and will always bring back happy memories of my classmates and our fascination with the art of poetry and Amerindian culture and folklore.
I got this because I wanted the title poem. Imagine my delight when I got it, and it also contains "Evangeline," "The Courtship of Miles Standish," and a generous selection of shorter poems. Many beautiful illustrations, and the title poem also has margin illustrations. I very nearly spent 3/4 the price for a paperback with just the title poem and no illustrations.This is a beautiful book.
I remember this poem from childhood. I am from New Orleans, but have lived in Minnesota & Wisconsin for over 25 years. I just knew that I needed this particular edition of the famous poem in my personal library, considering where I live. The pen & ink drawings are great, but the illustrations by Frederic Remington are such icing on the cake!
This free version, unlike many of the copies of "The Song of Hiawatha" floating around out there, does have proper line breaks and formatting.The left margin is excessively wide, causing longer lines to continue in an outdented configuration on the subsequent line (this version could use improvement in that area), but that's not a fatal flaw in the presentation.This version is superior to the other free version (ASIN B000JQU6O0) which is quite jumbled together into giant blocks of uninterrupted text.As far as the poem itself, what can I say? Beautiful, elegant, and a must-read.
