Great book by a great man who I do not believe got the national recognition he deserved being America's first African American governor. This achievement was long before anyone ever heard the name Obama. And to think he did this as a grandson of slaves, having been born and raised in the old capitol of the Confederacy, Richmond, Virginia. I am not a Democrat but I have always admired Wilder's no nonsense ways and blunt talk that is so lacking in politicians today. I also had no idea how much truly horrible things he witnessed in combat in Korea and I now admire him even more. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is because much of the book is about Virginia politics and he gives a lot of insight into things that went on during his more active times in politics. The people he talks about are likely little known to those outside of Virginia and they may read this book and become bored. This is a true American success story and I recommend it.
I greatly enjoyed this book. It is well written, honest, and informative for those of us who have little knowledge (unless we read the autobiographies of other courageous black leaders who made a difference in America) of the struggles for advancement of human rights that minority groups have long endured. Educate yourself with an open mind. You will also love Deborah Davis' book "Guest of Honor" (Booker T. Washington) and books about George Washington Carver, Frederick Douglass, and many other great men of color.
I voted for Doug Wilder for Virginia's governor right after I moved to Richmond. A few years later, while attending the opening of an exhibit on slavery at the Museum of the Confederacy, I bent down to read a caption and bumped butts with someone behind me who happened to bend over at the same time. We turned around, both laughing. That was my up close and personal introduction to our governor. I have been a big fan ever since. Wilder is a thoughtful and candid memoirist, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading his version of his career and insightful take on the current state of our nation.
The book is an interesting take on how African Americans have made their political presence felt in post-Byrd Virginia. I found the in-fighting among democrats in the state a sign of trouble to come, especially Wilder's support of Republican Governor McDonald in his corruption trial and Wilder's refusal to endorse Barack Obama for his second term. I felt Wilder became somewhat of a loose cannon in his later political life which marred his rather astonishing rise to power in a state where at one time the governor closed all of its public schools rather than integrate them.
After reading this memoir I was even more impressed by Governor Wilder's life and accomplishments than I had been in the many years I had followed his political career. When you read about the pride, resilience,mand fortitude he possessed in his military and political experience you will be too. Against the odds, a man such as this comes along. Young people should listen and learn.
Birthday gift to a friend who wanted to know more about former Virginia Governor and thus book was recommended by my husband who said it was a phenomenal read. My friend echoed his sentiments.
Like the contents of book, I may have read this book earlier.
Really enjoyed reading this book about Governor Wilder. I was in high school in Virginia when he was elected governor. He inspired me to study & work hard & help others less fortunate.
