Review
"Readers will appreciate putting together the puzzle pieces, which are loosely based on the author's own family's story. A highly accessible and endearing historical mystery about a painful period of the past that still resonates in the contemporary landscape."—Kirkus Reviews"Ross (Kiki and Jacques) convincingly depicts Charlie's growing passion for—and persistence in—her quest, together with her love for music and a blossoming crush on a fellow musician. Family relationships, as well as issues of aging and Alzheimer’s, are drawn with gentleness and compassion. Ross moves the story at a smooth pace as Charlie encounters new obstacles and overcomes them, thanks to several serendipitous events. This is a tender, hopeful work with just the right level of suspense for younger fans of historical fiction."—Publishers Weekly "Charlie’s quest for information is realistically interrupted by her own life as a middle-schooler with crushes, friends, and her violin practice, and her competitive but still affectionate relationship with her brother underlines the loss that her grandmother feels in her sister’s disappearance. When the perennial family history project approaches, readers may be inspired to explore lesser-known limbs of their family tree to find surprises of their own."—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books "A satisfactory Holocaust story with encouraging words for readers to spark storytelling and genealogical research."—School Library Journal

Searching For Lottie is an intimate write. Charlie, an energetic, creative middle schooler goes on a quest via an ancestry school project. She lands on her great aunt's story. No one talks much about Lottie because the trauma of the Holocaust renders survivors mostly silent; they press with optimism toward the future like her Nana Rose. Charlie needs to know. She is fearless in her own way. I was riveted and I teared up more than once. This is a tough subject told compellingly through a child generations removed. Perfect.
I am grateful to have read an ARC copy of this story after winning a Twitter giveaway by the author.Charlie, a 7th grade violinist, has a school project - to research someone in her family. She decides to to look for information about her namesake, her grandmother's sister who, everyone believes, perished years ago during World War Two at the hands of the Nazis. Not only do Charlie and her great aunt Lottie share a name (Charlotte), but they also shared a love of classical music and the violin. Charlie is determined to find out as much as she can about her great aunt, but the more she learns, the more confusing the trails becomes. Told mostly in present time (2010) with a few flashbacks to Lottie's time, this middle grade mystery is a page turner that will have readers longing to know Lottie's true story. This will definitely be a great add to my middle grade classroom library.
An excellent way to introduce young readers to the history of the Holocaust through one individual story. The book is based on real people and events, but the main protagonist is a contemporary12-year-old girl who’s doing family research for a class assignment. The way the author brings Lottie, a young Jewish girl in WW2 Vienna and Budapest, into the life of Charlie, her present-day relative, is both clever and subtle. Both girls are very relatable in spite of the different worlds they grow up in. And the book is a page-turner, too, with a satisfying ending that demonstrates how life can go on after tragedy.
