Why do so many church leaders fall? Why do we regularly hear reports of leaders who have affairs, get divorced, misappropriate money, or injure their followers with their teachings? This book helps to answer these questions by pointing out that the very character traits that drive leaders to succeed often have a darkside that can cause people to fail.If you are a church leader, you need to read this book. It will help you to avoid /overcome the flaws in your own character. Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." This book will help you to examine your life. By looking at your personality, you will be a stronger leader. It will help you to shine a light in the areas of your greatest weakness.

This book was required by my university Christian leadership course. But although I bought it because I had to, I'm glad I did. The authors work through a comprehensive list of the major pitfalls that Christian leaders (or non-Christian leaders too, for that matter) can fall into. By way of backing up and illustrating their claims, many examples are presented from the Bible as well as recent history. Easy to read, engaging and highly applicable to ministry leadership.

This book was required reading for our Church Life Institute. I am grateful for the necessity of reading this wonderful book. The authors of this book talk openly about the personal failures they encountered in their own lives, and in the lives of other leaders, because of the dark side of their personalities. The book is made up of three parts. First, identifying the danger of the dark side of a leader's personality. Second, identifying your personal dark side. Third, the remedy for controlling the darkness. Although in was textbookish at times, I really enjoyed this book, overall. Although I was not surprised by the identity of my personal dark side, I was very surprised at the extreme nature of my personality, and the inherent danger of these unbalancing shifts. I cannot recommend it more highly!

Overcoming the Dark Side is an interesting book. Part 1 details how the dark side can self-destruct one's leadership. Often the dark side can be unknown to the leader and can show up in bizarre manners. Part 2 traces the different types of dark side leaders. According to McIntosh and Rima, these types are compulsive, passive aggressive, codependent, paranoid, and narcissistic. Part 3 of the book is where the authors prescribe ways to manage one's dark side. The appendices have a summary survey to see where one lands.Part 1 and the first chapters of Part 3 seem to record much of the same material. The theme is basically "you have a dark side and you must do something about it." I understand the importance of repetition as a rhetorical and teaching technique yet I found them repeating the same theme.Part 2 and the latter part of Part 3 are what make the book a good read for a leader. These describe the different types of dark side leadership and how one can go about managing one's dark side.

McIntosh and Rima have written a readable, ground-level introduction to the impact of early traumatic experiences on the development of personality aberrations. The primary value of this book is that it sensitizes you to the urgency for self-examination and the reality that indifference to this discipline may result in ministerial catastrophe. It is also replete with case studies that could serve as helpful preaching illustrations. The problem (in my opinion) is that in the authors' effort to be accessible to the general public, they have dramatically over-simplified the personality disorders they are attempting to help you diagnose. Further, the test questions they provide for self-diagnosis are framed in a way that is too leading to be helpful: "On a scale of 1 to 5 'I am obsessed with knowing how others feel about my performance.'" etc. In the final analysis...I gained a few helpful insights from this book but feel pretty sure that there are better (evangelical) resources in the world to help ministers work through the process of identifying and dealing with their personality aberrations.

Leaders of every type need to be aware that failure is half a breath away. None of us are above falling short of what we need to be. I especially found the chapter on the codependent leader to be powerful, that this is the leadership flaw that kills organizations more than any other. Pride is the heart of the fall of man. Self-image needs to be realistic and healthy.

I was very impressed with this book. it was extremely well written. The stories were not superficial but real, detailed, and hard-hitting. I highly recommend it. I was impressed with how the authors revealed their own dark sides in the beginning. One reviewer laments the lack of "sin" language when describing the "dark side" and there is a measure of truth to this analysis (as well as the lack of talk of demonic activity). HOWEVER, I attribute this to the author's focus. In other words, great authors and great books focus on particular themes. This great book focused on the inner psychological sides that unknowingly drive all of us--often because of past hurt. These issues are part of the FALL OF MAN, and I feel the authors clearly articulated that.
