My Formerly Hot Life is a wry look at the long period of your life that comes after the early years spent defining yourself and before the later years where there is more time behind you than ahead. The publicity and many of the reviews for this book focus on a story about the author being approached by a man who asks her for the time with no ulterior motives--he really wants to know what time it is. This experience, which highlights a crossing over from a hot pheromone laden babe to a "attractive for her age woman," is catchy, but it the book itself is so much more. The longest part of our lifespan is actually the years between youth and old age, and the years when much of our "living" occurs--marriage, building a career, starting a family, caring for your parents, setting priorities in our busy lives. Stephanie Dolgoff celebrates how we gradually stop caring so much about less important things--dissecting trivial conversations with friends, fighting to lose those last 5 pounds, wrestling into the latest fashions whether or not they suit us. Instead, with maturity comes the confidence to quit unfulfilling jobs, commit to marriage and children, celebrate our healthy bodies, demand that our clothes fit us instead of the other way around!I really enjoyed the ways the book celebrates the rewards of confidence, stability, and self-knowledge, and would recommend My Formerly Hot Life as positive (and sometimes funny) book for women of any age.

Stephanie Dolgoff coined the phrase "Formerly Hot" and uses it on her website and in her new book "Formerly Hot, Dispatches from Just the Other Side of Young", and has shown women (and some men) that we are all going through the same thing when we hit our 40's. We're not 25 anymore and we're being slapped in the face with it in little ways that all add up to one big laugh out loud read.Stephanie deals with the loss of certain things about her life, all the while keeping her sense of humor and by not taking herself too seriously. We should all take these life lessons from her. As "heartbreaking" as it is when you realize you can no longer wear a strapless bra, Stephanie realizes that being a Formerly is not so bad when know you don't need to drink yourself under the table and go to work with a hangover the next day to be cool. Stephanie finds the bright side to being "just" the other side of young and you'll laugh when you realize you've felt or done the exact same thing, which is when you realize that you really are a Formerly. If you're close to or over 40, you'll be amazed at how much this will book parallel your life or at least your thoughts about getting older. Read it, have a good cry, then laugh and just embrace your Formerly.

I'm 41 and just finished this book in 3 days. Seriously, it is a riot to read, a few times I was laughing with tears flowing down my cheeks! Which is what this book is about, I guess: putting words to the ambivalence one feels at this transition time, and this books help you laugh at the changes you are going through, while not lamenting for ONE second that you are aging or changing physically. I felt like it was written about me at times! I also have thick curly hair that is thinning, two young children, got married at the same age, am a working professional... the book is familiar in an uncanny way. It was quite a treat to read.Of course some people will relate less to this book than I did, but there's a book for everyone (e.g., if you prefer to read about Sarah Palin, there's one for you!!). I loved reading it and plan to give this to my friends at our 20th college reunion and to follow the author's blog.

I really wanted to get into the book, but I just couldn't. Perhaps reading all the Amazon customer reviews prior to purchasing it somewhat jaded me, but I really wanted to give the book a shot. I was at the vet's office reading a review in People Magazine when I first read about it and thought "Wow. That book sounds like a fun read!" I'm just glad I ordered a used copy. There were some funny points in the book that I laughed at, but not as easy to relate to as I thought. I'm slightly younger than the author but felt that I could still relate to the material, but perhaps our own life experiences were just too different to really connect. I would highly recommend Vicki Iovine's The Girlfriend's Guide for Getting Your Groove Back. It is very funny.

I loved this book! I had read the Formerly Hot blog, I had also read people's comments after other blogs posted articles on the upcoming publication of this book and it seemed many people were troubled (some actually enraged!) by the idea that you turned a certain age and were no longer HOT, or at least thats what the title suggested to them. They completely missed the point!I was never a guy magnet in my 20s. Unlike Stephanie Dolgoff I was never asked the time for any reason other than guysjust wanted the time :( I was attractive enough and even at times beautiful, but not in the Sex in the City way that gets you a night out without having to pay for a single drink. I actually get much more attention today as a 43 yr old mother of 3 than I EVER got in my 20s. I attribute that to knowing myself and being ridiculously confident (something I NEVER was) and all of those other things related to being a 'Formerly' that Stephanie talks about in this book.Even though I am far happier with myself now than I ever was when I belonged to that ever so desirable 19-35 demographic, I still went through all of those painful, slow motion at times, "bitch-slap" realizations that I was no longer the age I felt I was. You know, when you realize that all of the hot new actors (the ones that you respect and can actually act) being touted as the next Pacino or Meryl, could actually be your CHILDREN!!! - NO!!!....yes...sigh.Well thank you Stephanie, for saying it and for helping me laugh about it and for still looking pretty darn hot as a formerly.
