I just finished Penniless Publishing. It was a quick read and is a great place for first-time writers to start.ProsI love that the author provides recommendations, along with links. Hemmingway Editor, Grammarly (I knew about that one), Reedsy (though I don't see where this one is free for formatting as it is a marketplace), Canva, Unsplash, Pexels and CreateSpace. There are plenty of others recommended, so it is really worth checking out. A great place to get started. Plus, you get a bonus book, Published is Better than Perfect. So two for the price of one!ConsThe promised video training link does not work. I tried it multiple times, wherein it always asks me to sign up or log in. I go through the hoops and then it takes me to a page that says it no longer exits. Very disappointing. The Book Covers downloads say that the files are broken, so that was a bust too. Yikes. I sure hope he fixes both issues.
I'm a big fan of Ed Lewis. His book on book covers has become one of my favorite, of late. This one is equally good. Well, good is too modest a word - it's excellent! As usual, it proviges great content wrapped in great language. So great, that sometimes you may forget about the content, but proceeed with reading nonethless... :) Seriously, buy this book. You won't regret it. Trust my word.Many thanks, Ed!
In 2006 I wrote my first book. I published it in 2007 to the tune of $1200 through a very well-known self-publishing agency. Fortunately, I made my money back plus a little more. I’m amazed that I hadn’t considered how much technology has leveled the playing field of writing/publishing since that time! At present, I’m writing another book, and I realized at some point that I have been “dragging my feet†on it because I had no idea how I could spend that much money again to publish. My eyes have been opened now, and not only will I soon finish this book but I also have plans for others! The one drawback to the information in this book is that there are so many extra sites/links provided that there’s no way I can check out all of them. Perhaps the list could be shortened to include only the very best ones.
As a novice writer I appreciate the detailed information and links for further information. The information provided by the author saves me hours of research and $$. The best advice, get your book written first, then design your cover.
Great book with straightforward and honest advice. Quick and easy read, too. Ed provides lots of links to free resources, and advises the beginner to save his money for marketing his book. I've visited his site, as well as the links for the bonus material he provides. This book definitely over-delivers, which is absolutely wonderful compared to many others.
I just loved this book. I read it all the way through once and now I am going to read it again while taking notes of the sites and programs needed to do this for free. As a single mother of 4 girls and a severely low income this is exactly what I wanted to help realize my dream of writing.
I'd recommend this book, totally worth the price I paid for it. The author imparts information clearly with a friendly voice and a traditional writing style. I really liked that. Many of the non fiction e-books I've purchased use blog style writing complete with ascii emoji and lots of ellipsis. It was nice to see proper sentence structure and punctuation (I've been accused of being the grammar police, Ed Lewis is NOT under arrest for breaking the laws of the English language).I enjoyed seeing the diversity of free options and the candid recommendations where "you get what you pay for" suggestions were given. I also liked that it was not a complete sales pitch or overly stocked with affiliate links.
There is something very refreshing about Ed Lewis's "Penniless.." book and even though I am pressed for time, I just have to say something about it. First of all, he offers free products as a thanks for purchasing this book. Nothing new there, I get that all the time. But what is different is that he doesn't require that you part with your email address. Although there is nothing wrong with giving away products in exchange for the email address, I do get tired of the practice because it seems there is a flood of marketers jumping on the "I want to make lots of money that way too" bandwagon. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who is hesitant to give away their email address because their inbox is already flooded with email marketing offers. Secondly, Ed Lewis recommends letting reviews happen organically. Again, how refreshing. I have a problem with people who try to game the system and ruin the credibility of the entire review system. As another author I respect has said, write a book with great content and the reviews will follow. It's great to see an author who advocates honest publishing practices.
