Egypt, the country has always intrigued me. I've traveled quite a bit, but never made it there, so when I saw this book being offered, I thought, I really don't know much at all about its mythology. I know the Greeks and Romans and even some Norse myth, but only the names of a few of the Egyptian gods and goddesses. According to Roy Jackson, the author, Egypt does not have a common theology. With the mixture of faiths, a lot coming from settlers who arrived with their own gods and goddesses, mixing them all together, there is a lot of confusion. The author gives us a who's who of each of the deities along with a brief description of their symbols and popular aliases as well as their purpose. One of the most well known and popular god is Aten, who was the god of the pharaohs. He's known as the god of the sun. Of course there is Osiris and Isis who most everybody knows about, but the author lists many more in this book. A well researched, well done book on a confusing subject.
This book is full of great information. Mythology has always been a challenging subject for me, but this book makes understanding it a lot easier. My children studied mythology in High School, and I remember it being a bit difficult to research. I wish we would have had this book! It explains and describes the history of Egypt and it gives a detailed list and description of all of the Gods, including who their family members were, what they represented, etc. The book also includes a chapter on popular Egyptian stories and myths which I think is valuable to have in any mythology book. The stories and myths bring it all together. I loved reading what the Egyptians believed about creation, and as I read through it I could seemingly relate in certain ways. A father is ecstatic when his children return safely, there are siblings and half-siblings, love, honor, respect, and forgiveness. All in all a great and informative read.
I recently saw the movie Gods of Egypt and became interested in learning more about Egyptian mythology. I don’t know why we don’t learn as much about this in school as Greek or Roman mythology, because personally, I find the Egyptian gods and goddesses more fascinating! The author did a good job detailing the background and description of the deities, and was quick to point out their similarities with and differences from the western gods. Learned a lot of interesting facts and I’m very satisfied! Would recommend this to history junkies!
It's nice to have a book that covers a wide variety of Egyptian gods and myths/beliefs. I enjoy Hollywood movies and depictions of ancient Egypt but this book does a good job of telling you what it was actually like in their culture. The first section in the books lists the most famous gods and gives a brief history and description of them. The next section is about Egyptian stories and myths which was my favorite part.
Whenever I hear about Egypt it comes directly on my mind the pyramids,pharaohs and the beliefs. Egyptian is a great influence to us before even up until now. This is a very good source of information about its history and all. I read it wit great interest and definitely worth a share to my colleagues with the same interest as mine. I enjoyed reading the popular legends and myths in Chapter 4. Good to know the stories. Incredible and worth my time!
I have to say that I am new into Egyptian mythology and I was really impressed by this book. There are so much interesting and stunning information that will stuck your eye on your kindle until you finished the book. I read trough this book really quick, just because I liked it that much. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a brief overview of many of the various aspects to ancient Egyptian gods and myths.
Many times, we are only taught about our local and national history in America. However, what about the ancients of foreign lands such as Egypt. In fact, it is not very known about their religions, mythology, and cultural and scientific impacts. The author did an amazing job of describing and explaining in great detail the magnitude of Ancient Egypt.
Very good this book, entertaining for people who want to know about the history of Egypt, also it strikes me very much the history of the gods and this book provided me a knowledge about them... as is the importance that the Pharaohs gave to the gods as well as the myths of Egypt that are entertaining, this product, buy it in a promotion and I recommend it
very informative about a history of this world. Well written. Got a lot of points to ponder and learned something. Been excited in reading for the secrets of the Gods. Had dun reading it, while embracing lots of new facts. We already tackled this in school, but its not that in depth as this. Great book it is! Worth reading!
