I haven't finished this yet, but it is fascinating. Rather than just talk about what was discovered with these new molecular methods, he details the development of the methods themselves, and also explains how that led to the remarkable detail of archaeological information that they are finding. It was a little slow at first, but it gives a view behind the curtain of the subject.
Great insight into the mind of an archaeologist. It raises more questions than answers however, which excites my curiosity. Anyone who claims to know definitively how we became humans (hard coded - out of Africa Theory lets say), given the extremely limited scientific imaterial available, is only slowing the scientific progress being made daily by Archeologists and Archaeogenetics. This is an entertaining read regardless of what you theory you believe in.
Sometimes too technical for me about cell structure (high school biology was 55 years ago, before DNA was widely recognized) But very interesting nonetheless. I've always been interested in physical (pots sherds, coins, post holes et al) archaeology and this brings a totally new angle on archaeology..
I'm afraid this book is above my pay grade; too academic for me. I did not find it an enjoyable read. I'm afraid I needed to know more about modern day archaeological techniques to enjoy the book. As it is, I remember practically nothing about it.
Be ready to slog through some technical DNA info, gut it's a book that will interest archeology and genealogy buffs.

Excellent. A bit technical at times but informative and entertaining. Enjoyed it.
I really waffled on this because knowing that the author went to lengths to produce this book, was frayed with concern for my criticism.At length my decision was to be fair for the buying public which included myself, as well as any potential buyers.It just doesn't merit much! The author wasn't an innovator. For those seeking new information it isn't here.There are scientists and translators for the layperson, and this author is neither. He merely relates what other scientists have been capable of providing in layperson terms or re-produces what other translators have previously provided.........nothing more.Time and again he will open a subject then lead the reader to a wall where nothing is established. It can't merit more than two stars.....being generous.
