The first half of my book (the nutrition guide) was by far my favorite part. So much helpful insight into why the standard American diet is a big contributor in the explosion of auto-immune syndromes in the first place and why switching to a whole food, plant-centric diet is so important in trying to recover. What I loved about the recipes was the inclusion of a chart of which health facilitators (protein, fat, carbs, enzymes, antioxidants, fiber) are very high, high, moderate, low in each recipe and most recipes having a brief introduction that highlights health benefits. The recipes were well-organized, well laid out. An essential book for the shelf if you or a family member is suffering from fibro, lupus, chronic fatigue, etc.,So why not a 5 star rating? First, the author assumes that you, the fibro victim, has a very good income and food choices are not limited by budget. There is no attempt to offer solutions, for example, if you are a SNAP recipient and your entire grocery budget for 1 person might be $200 (or less) for the month. For all the effort put in the first half of the book to look at food choices for an entire day, there's no sample meal plans that offer suggestions on how to take the recipes and created breakfast-lunch-snack-dinner-snack meal plans for a day or a week that implement all of the advice given on food combining, number of meals eaten, etc. There is also quite a bit of dried fruit thrown into the recipes after the author really discouraged using it because of the high sugar. None of the recipes note the actual glycemic load of the meal in question, which would be extremely helpful- as would a list of which 2-4 micronutrients are most plentiful in that recipe. And lastly, which is my strongest complaint about most fibromyalgia cookbooks? There's no real thought put into how much time/effort/energy is required to prepare and cook the meals. When one suffers from a disease where it can be overwhelming to stand in place, chop ingredients, pick up plates, operate & clean blenders/food processors, or move plates and bowls around? Food doesn't only need to be nutrient-rich, it needs to be simple to make and easy to store, reheat, etc. Talking about avoiding microwave cooking whenever is possible is all well and good, but it doesn't necessarily take into consideration that during a fibro flare, its a major accomplishment to walk to the kitchen, open the refrigerator, put a dish in the microwave, and carry it to a table by yourself- you might need to go lay down before something is warmed up in the oven and may not have the energy to stir a pot on the stove.

I was really hoping for a more "sciency" book to help guide my diet, but this was far from it. The first part of the book was pretty decent and had some good general advice, but I really am not fond of the way she describes things and the diet she recommends. Here are some things I noticed while reading it:Cons:-Maybe it's to appeal to a wider audience, but the way she talks about some things seriously sounds like she's writing for one of those alternative lifestyle magazines. I couldn't find the quote quickly enough, but at one point she talks about homeostasis like your inner world in harmony. Coming from a science background, it was VERY hard to take her seriously when it sounds like she's talking to a room of conspiracy theorists with a third grade understanding of science.-She really pushes being vegetarian/vegan/raw vegan way too hard. If that works for you, that's great. But she makes it seem like cooking your food, eating dairy, and god forbid eating meat more than a couple times a week is going to cause a flare up from hell. And of course this is very true for some people. But it's FAR from the only truth she makes it out to be. I've done kind of a keto/paleo/primal hybrid for many years to help get my symptoms in control with great success, and if you take 10 minutes to read through forums and testimonials from other people who follow a similar diet, you'll quickly see that it works for many people. It doesn't work for all people or all symptoms. My point is that there are many ways to go about getting better. She presents one option with such extreme bias that it sounds like there are no other options.-She does offer suggestions to test what foods you may have issues with and does occasionally stress that everyone is different. Similar to my point above, it usually felt like "Everyone is different so you might tolerate ___ better, but really you should be on a raw vegan juicing diet and you're lucky if you can tolerate anything else." Not to that extreme of course, but it made my eyes roll enough that it started coming off that way.-She says that certain foods can be triggers, and then recommends them later on. And then has recipes with them for the second half of the book. Personally I feel that the recipes should be made of foods that she considers to be safe, maybe with suggestions on how to change it if you tolerate certain foods. Not "Here are all these terrible foods you should avoid except on rare occasions, here's a bunch of recipes for it."Overall I think the book pushes these things so much that I would not recommend it to someone who might be in extreme pain and confused where to start. I think it'll push you to fear most things you've ever eaten. HOWEVER, it's not all bad! As long as you're willing to take it with a grain of salt, there are some really great things in here.Pros:-She recommends whole, real food. She's not going to give you a bunch of brands of fibro safe protein bars or anything because she wants you to eat food as medicine.-I really love her focus on colorful nutrition, and I think she does a pretty good job of explaining why. Since reading this book I've definitely been encouraged to buy a wider variety of fruits and veggies which I think has helped a lot.-Her focus on veggies and fruit in the diet. Yes, I know I complained about this a lot in the cons but that's only because of how extremely she sells this idea. Fruits and veggies are very healthy for you, and having a wide variety of them every day is great. Substituting foods with low nutritional density with fruits and veggies is a good place to start.Takeaway: Research as much as you can and do a lot of self experimentation. This book has ideas in it that aren't presented elsewhere and that alone provides value since not everything works for everyone. But if this doesn't work for you, don't think you've run out options because there are a LOT of other things to try!

This book is a wonderful companion to daily life for the Fibromyalgia person. There is so much valuable information to learn and apply that I read small sections over and over again each day. The recipes are easy, taste good and pleasing to my family. After applying several of the principles, I have finally, after years of trying, lost 5 pounds. That may seem like an insignificant amount but in my life, it is encouragement to keep on. My pain level has decreased, energy level increased, mental attitude is more positive. Thank you Dr. D.!

GREAT BOOK!!! I am a long time fibromyalgia suffer and have done lots of research over the years on how to manage my symptoms without taking lots of medications. I am also a Registered Nurse that specializes in wellness. This book is spot on with all my personal findings. I wish I had found this in the beginning, it would have saved me so much time and frustration. If you are new to fibro, do yourself a favor and get this book. If you are a long time suffer, get this book! It is life changing. I have had a LONG journey with fibro and I can honestly say, proper nutrition and exercise is the key to managing your symptoms. The book is very informative and will guide you along the way.

Great cookbook. Has many recipes and explains why some of the ingredients are used. I have to substitute some items because of food allergies but I love it so far.

This book is packed with useful information. Reading is not easy for many people, I hope people find time to learn from this book, and make healthy food at home.

This book gives a great explanation of fibromyalgia and has a lot of information on what foods to eat if you have it.
